Be prepared for continued fuel price increases and supply issues that will likely impact the Bristol Bay region this fall and winter.

Ongoing conflict in the Middle East is disrupting global energy markets. Alaska’s fuel supplies come primarily from Asia, and the price and availability of that fuel is being significantly impacted by fighting in the Middle East and the inability of ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The price of gasoline, diesel, and home heating fuel prices have recently increased by several dollars per gallon, and current forecasts suggest prices may continue to rise. These price increases are occurring just as our communities prepare for their summer and fall fuel deliveries, which our communities depend on to get through the winter.

Read more how these current events are impacting fuel availability and prices in Representative Bryce Edgmon’s recent newsletter and an article published by the Northern Journal.

We strongly encourage Bristol Bay’s communities and residents to prepare thoughtfully and early. Current supply constraints and price increases are going to affect the availability and price of fuels for the upcoming winter fuel orders. Our communities and residents need to factor these realities into their planning as they consider summer and fall fuel orders as well as their individual family budgets.

We encourage communities and households to:

  • Review fuel needs well in advance of upcoming barge orders.
  • Plan conservatively for higher prices this summer and winter.
  • Build room in local and household budgets wherever possible.
  • Communicate early with suppliers, utilities, and local leaders about projected needs and costs.
  • Do not rely on neighboring communities or utilities to have excess fuel available mid-winter.

While global events are beyond Alaska’s control, preparation is within our reach. Through planning and collaboration with regional and state-wide stakeholders, we can reduce financial strain and ensure that our communities are ready for the winter ahead.

Bristol Bay residents have always met challenges through preparation and cooperation, and we are confident that together we will navigate this one as well. Thank you for continuing to look out for one another.
