Letter from the President, Fall 2018

Posted on | Back to Posts

Fall is here, with another summer fishing season behind us. This is always a special season in Bristol Bay, from enjoying the outdoors to seeing time-honored traditions come to life in villages throughout the region. From hunting moose and caribou to berry harvesting and preserving, we are spending fall preparing for what comes next, as Alaskans have done for generations.

By now, we hope you have had a chance to read BBNC’s annual report for the 2018 fiscal year that ended in March. We always strive to deliver a report that goes beyond numbers and business performance; we aim to share the story of BBNC’s commitment to our shareholders, land, and Native way of life, and celebrate the spirit of this great place. As we imagine the report being read in homes across the region and beyond, we hope we have achieved that goal.

The feature story in this newsletter is a good example of the central theme of the annual report: momentum. As you will read, BBNC applied our expertise in government contracting, built over decades, to create a partnership with a village corporation the likes of which Alaska has never seen before. We shared our momentum with others in a new, exciting, and innovative way. This was one of the biggest initiatives of the past year and I am grateful to everyone who worked on it, both here and at Choggiung Limited. I hope it encourages other village corporations, regardless of size, to pursue their own opportunities for growth and diversification. We are always looking for new ways to collaborate and help make that happen.

Along with subsistence activities and shorter days, fall brings with it the chance for every shareholder to directly contribute to BBNC’s momentum and direction. With Shareholder Informational Meetings, the proxy submission deadline on October 3, and our Annual Meeting of Shareholders on October 6, this is a critical time to make your voice and opinions heard. I hope you will participate, however you can and wherever this season finds you. Your input matters and we are listening.

With thanks as always for your support,
Jason Metrokin
