Formed by Bristol Bay tribes in 1973, BBAHC began operating Kanakanak Hospital and the Bristol Bay Service Unit in 1980. It was the first tribal organization in the U.S. to do so under P.L.93-638 of the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act.

Located on the Alaska Peninsula, LPSD comprises an area roughly the size of West Virginia. The District is a component unit of the Lake and Peninsula Borough. The Central Office is located in King Salmon, approximately halfway between Port Alsworth the northern most school and Ivanof Bay, the southernmost.
